CONTROL FREAK: A PERSON WHO HAS AN OBSESSIVE NEED TO CONTROL OTHER PEOPLE OR SITUATIONS.
KING DAVID’S DANGEROUS DESIRE TO CONTROL
11 Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, and my master Joab and my lord’s men are camped in the open fields. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!"
13 At David’s invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master’s servants; he did not go home.
14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.
15 In it he wrote, "Put Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die." 2 Samuel 11:11,13-15
WHAT IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF OUR DESIRE TO CONTROL? FEAR
“Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.” Psalms 55:5
HOW TO LOSE CONTROL
1. SURRENDER YOUR FEAR.
· FEAR OF REJECTION
· FEAR OF FAILURE
· FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
“So do not fear, for I am with you;… for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
WHAT FEAR DO YOU NEED TO SURRENDER?
NEXT STEP: I will surrender my fears to Christ Jesus.
2. SURRENDER THE DETAILS.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding…and he will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
EL-ELYON – SOVEREIGN GOD; THE GOD WHO IS IN CONTROL.
NEXT STEP: I will surrender the details of my life to God.
3. SURRENDER YOUR LIFE.
“Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.” Psalms 51:1-2 NLT
NEXT STEP: I surrender my life to Christ Jesus.
Family Devotional or Life Group Questions
1. What types of fear cause you to be a control freak?
2. What fear do you need to surrender?
3. Whom and what do you most try to control?
4. What areas of your life does God want you to surrender?
God’s Kingdom Economy Exhortation
2 Chronicles 31:4-10
4 He (King Hezekiah) ordered the people living in Jerusalem to give the portion due the priests and Levites so they could devote themselves to the Law of the LORD.
5 As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the first fruits of their grain, new wine, oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything.
6 The men of Israel and Judah who lived in the towns of Judah also brought a tithe of their herds and flocks and a tithe of the holy things dedicated to the LORD their God, and they piled them in heaps.
7 They began doing this in the third month and finished in the seventh month.
8 When Hezekiah and his officials came and saw the heaps, they praised the LORD and blessed his people Israel.
9 Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the heaps;
10 and Azariah the chief priest, from the family of Zadok, answered, "Since the people began to bring their contributions to the temple of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and plenty to spare, because the LORD has blessed his people, and this great amount is left over." (NIV)
King Hezekiah saw the heaps and basically said, “Explain this to me; are the people doing okay? Have they given too much?” The priest replied, “No, King, you need to understand that since the people began to tithe, God has blessed them. What you see here is the tithe of the abundance with which God has blessed them.”
When God’s people began to tithe, God began to bless them even more.
Tithing blesses God’s people, but it also brings provision into God’s house.

Believers Church of Statesboro is excited to announce hiring our Associate Pastor Dan Friesen. Dan has nine years of Ministry experience which includes Youth Pastor, Chi Alpha, Mission Trips, Church Planting, and Associate Pastor. Dan is a graduate of Southeastern University, Lakeland, Florida (2001-2005), and holds a BA in Pastoral Studies, and a Minor in Missions. He was a Collegiate Masters Corp Graduate and voted MVP. This program required that students take a full load of college courses (14+hrs.) a semester in addition to volunteering 30+ hours at a local church as an intern.
While at Southeastern Dan also served in a leadership role in a Southeastern University Traveling Team, in which he co-led a group of sixteen students on a six week tour across eastern and central United States.
As a youth Dan received the Citizenship Award in his senior year of high school, and won 1st & 2nd Place in state Junior Bible Quiz competitions. He also received a Superior Rating in the National Fine Arts Competition two consecutive years in Songwriting, Preaching & Drama.
Dan spent his teen years in Savannah, GA, and married Jessica Mock from Rincon, GA. Dan and Jessica have two wonderful daughters Halle Grace (3) & Rebecca Joy (1).
Dan’s cover letter to his resume caught Pastors Scott eye when Dan stated the he had a deep abiding love for Statesboro and the GSU campus.
In Dan’s “Philosophy of Ministry” he shares his priorities in life which reads:
To live a life of ceaseless worship for the glory of Jesus by devoting myself continually to Him in joyful service and the spiritual disciplines.
• By loving and leading my family.
• By loving and serving the city through the church.
• By proclaiming the gospel.
• By equipping, training and commissioning men to love and serve their families and their city with the gospel.
• By wisely stewarding the resources Jesus has entrusted to me for the furtherance of His kingdom.
Dan’s live verse:
“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
Pastor Scott and the Staff of Believers had the privilege of spending several days with Dan and his Family and there was an instant connection. Dan is full of energy, zeal for the Lord, loves the lost and has a definite call of God upon his live. He loves his family and the local church and is very excited about moving to Statesboro and partnering together in our Mission, Goals and Purposes.
Dan will also be helping Pastor Scott recruit and hire our new Worship and Creative Leader. As we search for this person, Dan is more than capable or filling in that role as well.
We are all very excited for Dan and his family to join Believers as we Teach, Encourage, and Inspire Authentic Christianity to the people of Statesboro, Bulloch County, and surrounding areas!
Please join us in welcoming them as well!

You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." Isaiah 14:13-14
Contrast, his most common two words, “I will”, with the words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane when He said not I will but “Thy will be done.”
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. Proverbs 16:5
"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." 1 Peter 5:5
(NKJ) “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
NEXT STEP: Memorize 1 Peter 5:5 "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
THREE TYPES OF SINFUL PRIDE
1) I’M BETTER THAN YOU PRIDE.
How do you recognize “I am better than you” pride in yourself?
- Critical Attitude
- Spiritual Pride
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men-robbers, evildoers, adulterers-or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ Luke 18:13
2) I CAN HANDLE IT MYSELF PRIDE.
How do you know if you struggle with “I can handle it myself ” pride?
- You don’t ask for help.
- You have an on-again, off-again prayer life.
The Prodigal Son
Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ Luke 15:11-12
"When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’ Luke 15:17-19
3) IT DOESN’T APPLY TO ME PRIDE.
"Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him." 2 Samuel 12:4
Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! 2 Samuel 12:7 “Auttaeesh.”
DRAW CLOSE TO GOD
· THE PROUDER YOU ARE, THE FURTHER YOU FALL FROM GOD.
· THE CLOSER YOU ARE TO GOD, THE MORE HUMBLE AND BROKEN YOU BECOME.
…I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." Isaiah 6:1-3
Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." Isaiah 6:5
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
NEXT STEP: In a group setting, I will discuss the Family Devotional or Life Group Questions.

Join us at Believers this Sunday, 8-14-11, at 9 or 11. This week we will deal with the sickness in many of us called “Envy”. Hey, am I the only one that has a problem with this? God is really going to show us things about envy that you don’t want to miss.
Also it’s RALLY WEEK. Time for you to sign up for a Life Group. Check them out online and get connected this Sunday.
Don’t forget that Kids Stuff Praise and Dance Team practice begins this Sunday from 5:00 – 6:00. Kids won’t be able to sing and dance on stage at Kids Stuff 8-28 if they are not part of practice.
Ladies, see you at the Italian dinner tonight in the Believers pavilion at 6:30 p.m.
But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. James 3:14-16
ENVY: RESENTING GOD’S GOODNESS IN OTHERS’ LIVES.
IGNORING GOD’S GOODNESS IN MY OWN LIFE.
ENVY IN THE BIBLE
Cain envied Abel… Genesis 4:5
Rachel envied Leah… Genesis 30:1
Leah envied Rachel… Genesis 30:15
The brothers envied Joseph… Genesis 37:5
Saul envied David… 1 Samuel 18:7-9
Lucifer envied God… Isaiah 14:13-14
Chief priests envied Jesus… Mark 15:10
The Jews envied Paul… Acts 13:44-45
Envy hurts you.
A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. Proverbs 14:30
Envy is a sign of immaturity.
1 Cor 3:2-3
2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able;
3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? (NKJ)
Envy is not love.
1 Cor 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (NIV)
Envy is a work of the flesh.
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (NKJ)
"Envy is the daughter of pride, the author of murder and revenge…the perpetual tormenter of virtue. Envy is the filthy slime of the soul; a venom, a poison, which consumeth the flesh and drieth up the bones." Socrates
WHO OR WHAT DO YOU ENVY?
The sickness, sinful sickness, what do we do about it?
We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves… 2 Corinthians 10:12
Each one should test his own actions…without comparing himself to somebody else…
- CELEBRATE GOD’S GOODNESS TO OTHERS.
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Romans 12:15
"Don’t be afraid," he said. "My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. 1 Samuel 23:17
- EMBRACE GOD’S GOODNESS TO YOU.
Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind. Ecclesiastes 6:9 (NLT)
Always be joyful. Keep on praying. No matter what happens, always be thankful, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLT
I’ve got Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, in my heart. What more could any guy ever want?
…Our lives were full of evil and envy. We hated others, and they hated us. But then God our Savior showed us his kindness and love. He saved us, not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit…Titus 3:3-5 NLT
Family Devotional or Life Group Discussion Questions
1) Who or what do you envy?
2) Who do you need to celebrate with?
3) What “but” do you need to remove?
(You might say, I’m thankful for my house, but…)

ARE YOU GIVING THE DEVIL A GUEST ROOM?
"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:26-27
topos (top’-os); opportunity, location, place, room
Cain and Abel
Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." Genesis 4:6-7
WRONG WAYS WE HANDLE ANGER
1) SPEWERS EXPRESS IT.
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.
A quick-tempered man does foolish things. Proverbs 14:17
2) STEWERS SUPPRESS IT.
When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. Psalm 32:3
The older brother became angry and refused to go in… Luke 15:28
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY ANGER?
1) FIERY SINFUL ANGER: PUT IT OUT.
Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out. Proverbs 17:14
… Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. James 1:19-20
NEXT STEP: I will put out my fiery sinful anger in my life.
2) SANCTIFIED ANGER: FAN THE FLAME.
(Jesus) looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts…Mark 3:5
…said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Mark 3:5
NEXT STEP: I will fan the flames of sanctified anger in my life.

Summer Break! No Mid-week Services for two weeks.
Fall Life Groups begin 08-15-11 (Rally Weeks 08-07-11 and 08-14-11)
One Hour On Wednesday, Believing Kids, Merge, and Holy Culture start back on 08-17-11.
This Sunday is a BIG DAY! Invite your friends and family to Believers at 9 or 11 for an exciting new series “The Sickness Within”.
It’s easy to look good on the outside, to appear squeaky clean, but what about those sins within? Anger, Envy, Pride, Control, and Bitterness. If not dealt with they become a sickness or cancer that will destroy from the inside out. During this series we are going to let Christ Jesus set us free and heal the sickness within. So make sure that you don’t miss this!
I’m sure you know others who could benefit from this series as well. Tell them about it. Invite them to come and experience this new freedom and healing that is only found in Christ Jesus.
Inviting is easier than you think. What do you have to lose? Not much.
What do they have to gain? Eternal life change.
Invitation Cards are available in the Church Foyer for you to take to your friends.
