Weird View of Money Pic

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Matt 7:13-14

When it comes to our finances, we need “A WEIRD VIEW OF MONEY”

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: (KJV) We are a peculiar people = weird people! Normal isn’t working.

  • IF YOU WANT WHAT NORMAL PEOPLE HAVE, DO WHAT NORMAL PEOPLE DO.
  •  IF YOU WANT WHAT FEW PEOPLE HAVE, DO WHAT FEW PEOPLE DO.

Join us Sunday morning at Believers 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. as we finish up our “WEiRD” series. Come learn the five core principles in Scriptures that, if you do them consistently over a long period of time, you will be weird!

Weird Way to Save the world pic

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Matt 7:13-14

What road are you walking down? Where are you headed…life or destruction?

THERE ARE ESSENTIALLY TWO VIEWS OF GOD.

1) RELIGION: MAN’S NORMAL ATTEMPT TO REACH GOD or RELIGION as GOD.

Religion is believing the right things, behaving the right way, hanging with the right crowd, and ostracizing anyone who does not agree with us.

Religion is focusing on the external, while neglecting the internal. Look at the Pharisees.

If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a prosecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law, blameless.” Phil. 3:4-6

I literally altered my body to align with religion. I am the right nationality. I have the right pedigree. I come from the right family. As it relates to the law, I am the perfect citizen.

  • Equivalent of graduating top of the class from the most renowned bible school
  • Growing up only listening to Christian radio and only wearing Christian t-shirts
  • Getting baptized by Billy Graham in the Jordan River with the Pope standing by giving his blessing

“But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of knowing Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish…” Phil 3:7-8

Rubbish: skúbala (scoo’-ba-la) rubbish, garbage, human or animal waste, dung.

Religion is a pile.

“The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouths and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.” Isaiah 29:13

To see what Jesus said of these people, look at Matthew 23:13-33

RELIGION IS RUBBISH, AND IT LEADS TO ONE OF TWO THINGS:

· Pride Pharisee and tax collector (Luke 18:11-12)

· Despair What I want to do I don’t do. What I do I don’t want to do.

NEXT STEP: I will take inventory of my life by asking myself these questions:

  • Am I living my life trying to get the approval of God?
  • Is pride keeping me from repenting?
  • Am I making disciples to act more like myself or more like Jesus?

2) CHRIST: GOD’S WEIRD WAY TO REACH MAN

“I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”

Phil 3:8-9

“For my grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of the worlds, so no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Jesus Christ for good works, which God prepared beforehand…” Eph 2:8-10

Salvation and righteousness is not something we achieve on our own doing. It is a free gift from Jesus. This is WEIRD.

“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all…” 1 Tim 2:5-6

Normal says there are many ways to God. WEIRD says there is one; only Jesus.

RELIGION RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS

What I do What Jesus has done

Do Done

I am good and don’t need Jesus. I am a sinner in need of Jesus.

If I obey, God will love me. Because God loves me, I can obey.

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" John 11:25-26

NEXT STEP: I will make time this week to focus not on the things that I have to do or don’t have to do, but rather on what Jesus has done and let it foster the greatest response!

Family Devotional or Life Group Questions

· How have you seen pride or despair come from pursuing God through your own religious effort?

· What seems the weirdest to you about God reaching out to us through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ?

· As you think about the weird way God chose to save the world, what response does it compel you to make?

Take time to talk it over with a friend to see your life through a weird new perspective. Download a study guide for your Life Group or watch a short discussion video at www.lifechurch.tv/tio-questions.

Sunday we continue our WEiRD Series. We will discuss man’s “normal” view of God vs. the “weird” view. Some of the harshest words in all of scripture were pointed at religious people. Jesus mocked the Pharisees for their pride, for their arrogance and their piety. Essentially Jesus came to save us from religion and to call us into a relationship with God Himself.

10-16-11 Weird 3 Weird Desires

WEIRD—3 “WEIRD DESIRES” Believers Statesboro 10-16-11

  • IF YOU WANT WHAT NORMAL PEOPLE HAVE, DO WHAT NORMAL PEOPLE DO.
  • IF YOU WANT WHAT FEW PEOPLE HAVE, DO WHAT FEW PEOPLE DO.

For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

1 John 2:16-17 NLT

NORMAL PEOPLE

  • WANT WHAT THEY WANT NOW, NOT LATER.

The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ Luke 15:12 NLT

  • TRADE THE ULTIMATE FOR THE IMMEDIATE.

Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 30 He said to Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!"… 31 Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright." 32 "Look, I am about to die," Esau said. "What good is the birthright to me?" Genesis 25:29-32

NEXT STEP

  • WHAT’S YOUR BOWL OF STEW? _____________________________

WEIRD PEOPLE

  • KNOW LATER IS OFTEN BETTER THAN NOW.

Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city. Proverbs 16:32 NLT

NEXT STEP I will be patient and wait for God’s best.

  • SEEK GOD UNTIL HIS DESIRES BECOME THEIR DESIRES.

Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires.

Galatians 5:16-17 NLT

NEXT STEP Jesus, I will seek you until your desires become my desires.

Family Devotional or Life Group Questions

  • What desires are holding you back from living as weird as God may be leading you to be?
  • What’s your bowl of stew—the main desire that you’re trading in God’s best for?
  • How will you get help to overcome the sinful desires that have a hold on you?

God’s Kingdom Economy Exhortation

Throughout my life as an evangelist and pastor, I have been amazed at the consistency of the testimonies I hear about tithing. In more than 20 years of ministry, every tither I have spoken with has given me a similar testimony; every non-tither has also given me a similar testimony, but one that is different from those who tithe. (And keep in mind the Biblical exhortation to let everything be established by the mouth of two or three witnesses [see 2 Cor. 13:1].)

Without exception, tithers say, “I’m blessed” or “God has blessed me.” They all give the testimony that God is blessing them. In contrast, every non-tither I have ever spoken with gives this testimony: “I can’t afford to tithe.”

Now, I want you to think about these two statements and the two types of people they come from: All tithers give the testimony that they are blessed, and all non-tithers give the testimony that they can’t afford to tithe.

I think Forrest Gump could discern the pattern on this one. He would probably say, “I’m not a smart man, but I’m going to tithe. And that’s all I have to say about that.”

What is your testimony?[1]

Paul is teaching us in 2 Corinthians 3 that the Glory of the New Covenant is much more glorious than the Old Covenant.

Jesus tells us in the gospel of John that He is the Glory of God!  But it even give more exciting when Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we are being transformed into the image of Christ! “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

Join us tonight at One Hour On Wednesday to experience the Glory of Jesus and to see how our “Image” is changing as a result of His Glory!

Youth will meet in the “Garage”!
