Over the past couple of weeks we have learned that one person has the ability to make a change for the better by using their story and being worship-full in all that they do! Pastor Scott shared two IGNITE principles with us:

1. My testimony is a powerful tool that God will use to lead others to faith in Him. Are you using your testimony to share your faith?

2. My response to pressure opens up doors to share my faith. Are you working to create habits that are worship-full?

This week we continue our IGNITE series with “My Readiness Can Change the World”. Join us at 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. to find out how we can prepare and ready ourselves to be used by God.

Ignite Pic

Join us in celebrating with the 26 men, women and children who were baptized Sunday at Believers! It was a special time as we watched them make a public declaration to follow Christ! If you missed Sunday and want to hear how we can live our lives more “WORSHIP-FULL” go to http://believersstatesboro.com/home/online-sermons/ to hear Sunday’s sermon. Below are the notes to follow along with.

IGNITE My Worship Can Change the World Believers Statesboro 9-23-12

Acts 16:20-35 – Paul & Silas Worship in Jail

20 They brought them before the magistrates and said, "These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar 21 by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice."

22 The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten.

23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into

prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was IGNITE My Story PICsuch a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody’s chains came loose. 27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul shouted, "Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!"

29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.

30 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved– you and your household." 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God– he and his whole family. 35 When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: "Release those men." (NIV)

IGNITE PRINCIPLE: My response to pressure opens up doors to share my faith.

THE FIVE HABITS OF A WORSHIP-FULL LIFE

Five Habits for a Worshipful Life.

1. Regular daily devotions.

Joshua 1:8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (NIV)

Rate yourself from 1-10. After you do that, recommit yourself to having a daily devotion.

2. Faithful Sunday worship attendance.

Hebrews 10:25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. (NLT)

3. Active Life Group participation.

Acts 5:42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. (NIV)

Write above “Temple courts”, “worship service”. Write above “house to house”, “life groups”.

That was the early church strategy. That’s our strategy at Believers Church. .

Rate yourself from 1-10. If you are not in a Life Group, why?

4. Consistent sacrificial giving.

Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. (NIV)

5. Prayerful and sincere witnessing.

When you invest in others and invite them to church what you will discover is that while you are trying to get them to come to church with you, in the process, God is changing you. You want to change their lives, but by witnessing to them, God changes you.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; the word is dynamos. Dynamite power! You get that. (You get power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and it causes you to WITNESS.) and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (NIV)

Memory Verse 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, (NIV)

Rate yourself from 1-10.

Look back over all five of these areas. Which one or two do you want to go to work on over this next week? Don’t try to do all 5 of these, unless you really feel that is what God wants you to do.

Baptism Invitation

Act 16:32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in the house.

Acts 16:30-31

30 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

31 They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved– you and your household."

32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house.

33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. (NIV)

Community Group and Family Devotional Questions

IGNITE: MY STORY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD 09-16-12 Believers Statesboro

The Power of A Story

I want to teach you how to ignite your faith and I want to show you how your story can change the world, by telling you about a story of a man who was born blind, who was a beggar inside the walled city, and who had a world changing encounter with Jesus.

John 9:1-7

1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.

2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

3 "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.

4 As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.

5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

6 Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.

7 "Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. (NIV)

8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?"

9 Some claimed that he was. Others said, "No, he only looks like him." But he himself insisted, "I am the man."

10 "How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded.

11 He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see." (NIV)

What happens between verse 11 and verse 24 is all these arguments break out. Some were excited about his healing. But the Pharisees, they really don’t take it so well. They actually begin to argue with the man, and they try to trap Jesus, because Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath.

John 9:24-25

24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God," they said. "We know this man is a sinner."

25 He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!" (NIV)

The questing goes on for a little while, and the Pharisees throw the man out of the temple.

John 9:35-38

35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

36 "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him."

37 Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."

38 Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him. (NIV)

Ignite Principle

My testimony is a powerful tool that God will use to lead others to faith in Him!

How do you use your story to change the world?

1. Confirm my story.

Confirm that you are, in fact, following Jesus. You want to make sure that you have a testimony to share. The reason some people don’t share their testimony is because they lack assurance of salvation. Do I really know Jesus? Am I going to Heaven?

I John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (NIV)

  1. Complete my story.

You want to complete your story. You think through it, you write it out and you practice telling your story. Everybody has a story to tell. You just have to talk about your experience.

1 Peter 3:15-16 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. (NIV)

I Peter 3:15 …If someone asks you about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. (NLT)

Why Your Story Is Important

  • Your friends are interested.
  • Your friends can relate to it.
  • Your story is hard to argue with.

“The skeptic may deny your doctrine or attack your church, but he cannot honestly ignore the fact that your life has been changed.” Chuck Swindoll “Come Before Winter”

Concluding Question

“King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets?” (Acts 26:27)

Unifying Theme

Paul’s zeal for serving God

Cautions: Beware of talking about yourself but not relating your experience to the other person’s life. You first need to listen to them to be able to connect your story to their situation.

  1. Commit your story to God.

Acts 20:24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me– the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s

grace. (NIV)

Whenever you commit your story to God, God will use it in just unbelievable ways.

Memory verse: 1 Timothy 1:16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. (NIV)

Can one person really change the world? I believe you can! You can change the world by using a simple, but powerful tool. That tool is your story!

Join us this Sunday, 09-16-12, as we learn how to tell our story. When we begin to share our story, God can use us in ways that we can only imagine.

This new series, “Ignite”, is all about how one life can change the world.

AWAKE Awake For Harvest Believers Statesboro 9-9-12

Some content adapted from Ed Young “Changing Lanes”.

Matt 9:35-38 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." (NIV)

The Question: Is the harvest still plentiful in this day and age, when evil seems to abound and the hearts of men seem to be so hard?

The Answer: Verse 36 “When he (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Where are the fruits of our labor? The Problem: We are sleeping through the harvest.

Proverbs 10:5 He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully. (NIV)

Next Step: I will not be a shameful child, but I will awake and work the harvest with the Father.

Realizing people are lost and dying should cause us to hear the 5:14 alarm and wake up!

Eph 5:8-17

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light

9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)

10 and find out what pleases the Lord.

11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.

13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,

14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

15 Be very careful, then, how you live– not as unwise but as wise,

16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. (NIV)

“Five Fearsome Facts That Will Keep a Believer Awake”

1. Wake Up Because Everyone Is Not Going To Heaven

Matthew 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. (NIV)

Both heaven and hell are gated communities. …But everyone is not going to heaven.

2. Wake Up Because More People Will Go To Hell Than Heaven

Matt 7:13 … For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, (NIV)

Matt 25:30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (NIV)

Matthew 7:14 “…But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (NIV)

John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (NIV)

There is no option B or C? Jesus said He was the only way! That should wake you up!

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (NIV)

3. Many Sleepers Who Think They Are Christians Aren’t

Matt 7:21-23

21 "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’

23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (NIV)

First John’s Test of Life In Christ: 1) The test of obedience (The Moral Test) 2) The test of love 3) The test of belief (The Doctrinal Test)

The Fruit

Matthew 7:16: “By their fruit you will recognize them.”

But I Believe

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that– and shudder. (NIV)

2 Cor 13:5-6 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you– unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. (NIV)

Next Step: I will inspect my fruit and examine myself to see if I pass the test.

4. Awake Now Because You Will Not Get Another Opportunity After You Die

Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” (KJV)

What we do on this side of the grave affects where we will spend eternity.

5. Awake Today Because This Could Be Your Last Chance

Luke 13:24-25

24 "Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ "But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ (NIV)

How close are you to death? We’re just one heartbeat away from eternity.

You’re not ready to live until you’re ready to die.

As you have done this stock and inventory; as you have taken this spiritual physical today; as you’ve thought about the fruit and of your life, are you a follower of Christ? Are you awake to Christ Jesus?

BAPTISM INVITATION – Matthew 10:32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.

Next Step: I will publicly acknowledge Jesus by being baptized on 09-23-12 @ 9 ___ or 11 ___

AWAKE Week 3 Awake, Watch, Pray Believers Statesboro 09-02-12

Sleeping Through Opportunity

One of the greatest missed opportunities in scripture has to be when Jesus was in a time of distress and sorrow and He asked Peter, James, and John to pray for Him. But when the opportunity arose, they slept right through it. Not just one time, but three times they missed the opportunity because they fell asleep.

Read Matthew 26:36-54 …Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

1Thessalonians 5:6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and

self-controlled. (NIV)

NEXT STEP: I will memorize 1 Thessalonians 5:6

The Flesh Is Weak

Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." (NIV)

Our spirit may be willing, but our flesh is weak and we fall into temptation.

1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (NIV)

Wake up, watch and pray! Do this not just for yourselves, but for others as well.

Ephesians 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. (NIV)

Pray To Overcome Temptation

Matthew 26:41Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation…” (NIV)

Sleep is not an instantaneous occurrence. It’s a gradual process that comes in steps. But once we’re asleep, waking up can be difficult. The same is true with sin. We enter sin, like sleep, slowly, even methodically. But once we’re in it, once we’ve fallen asleep to what God has in store for us, we can fail to realize the potential impact we can have in the world.

Sleeping in the Lap of Sin

Judges 14:1-4 Samson went down to Timnah and saw there a young Philistine woman… (NIV)

In the company of his new Philistine friends Samson begins to break his Nazirite vows. He wants to marry and become unequally yoked. He eventually falls in love with the prostitute, Delilah, and she wanted to know the secret to his strength.

Judges 16:16-21 …Having put him to sleep on her lap, she called a man to shave off the seven

braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him. (NIV)

Put On the Armor of Light

Romans 13:11-14 And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to

wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put

on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness,

not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe

yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the

sinful nature. (NIV)

Are You Walking In Darkness or Light?

I John 1:6-7 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not

Live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one

another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (NIV)

In the Bible the life of sin and the life for God are often referred to as “darkness” and “light,”

John 3:20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned (Isaiah. 9:2).

Romans 13: 12b – 14 … So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality

and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus

Christ, (Jesus is the light!) and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful

nature. (NIV)

NEXT STEP: I will put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of Light.

Jesus referred to Himself as light and His followers as sons of light.

John 12:35-26a “Then Jesus told them, ‘You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light” (NIV)

The 5:14 Alarm!

Ephesians 5:8-17 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Be very careful, then, how you live– not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will

is. (NIV)

Wake up to your opportunities! Wake up to your potential! Don’t fall asleep! Don’t miss the opportunity to minister to Jesus or minister for Jesus!

NEXT STEP: I will live as a child of light rather than a child of darkness.

Community Group and Family Devotional Questions

1. Do you have any regrets where you feel like you may have slept through a God-type opportunity?

2. Why do you think prayer is a good deterrent to temptation and sin?

3. Pastor Scott compared falling into sin to falling to sleep. It’s a gradual process. Do you agree or disagree? Explain your answer.

4. How do you put on the armor of light and clothe yourself with Christ Jesus?

5. List some practical ways to live as children of the light?
