I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.John 10:10(NKJ)

Who would say that God has blessed you? Who would say that I would like to be even more blessed?

(Jesus’ words ) It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35

People think that in order to be more blessed, you must get more. But, the secret to being more blessed, to experiencing the Abundant Life, is having not only a servant’s heart, but a givers heart as well. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.John 10:10 (NKJ) That’s what Jesus wants for me and that’s what Jesus wants for you – “Abundant Life”. That’s why He came. He wants you to not only have eternal life with Him in heaven, but He wants your life right now, right here on this earth, to be full, meaningful, rewarding, and abundant! The Greek word for abundant is perissos, meaning superior or beyond measure. Are you living that kind of life? Now that you are a Christian, is your life superior to what it was before? Are you living a life that is beyond measure?

In our “Greatness as we Serve” series we learned one of the keys to an Abundant Life was

serving others. John 13:17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (NIV)

Last week we heard a great testimony from Jordan Murray about her healing and realized that God wants to bless us in intangible ways! The abundant life involves blessings that money can’t buy!

Today we want to consider the fact that an abundant life is a life lived according to all of God’s principles, including God’s financial principles too. And God wants to bless us in tangible ways too.

Why would God want to bless us financially? So that we can be a blessing to others. This begins a wonderful life cycle. As the Greatness Principle states: When you bless others, God blesses you.

When God blesses you, you bless others and on it goes.

But many of us here today aren’t living that type of life style and the reason is that we don’t do what we boldly declare on our money with the words, “In God We Trust.” We don’t trust God. We say we do. But do we really? Do we trust God not only with the intangibles, but the tangible things as well?

God’s Divine Portion

In Genesis God created the heavens and the earth and placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to live and enjoy the presence of God. Now that was an Abundant Life!

Gen 1:28-30 …And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground– everything that has the breath of life in it– I give every green plant for food." And it was so. (NIV) There was however one restriction.

Gen 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;

17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will

surely die." (NIV) Sounds easy! God said, don’t mess with the fruit on the tree in the middle of the garden. It’s my tree. Well, the evil one slithered up to Eve and what did the evil one do? He wanted to separated God and Man. He didn’t want them walking in an Abundant Life relationship with God. So the devil pointed to God’s divine portion. He said, “Eat from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the forbidden fruit.” He was all about robbing God’s divine portion.

Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food (She saw it, that’s the lust of the eye) and pleasing to the eye, (That’s the lust of the eye along with the lust of the flesh. and also desirable for gaining wisdom, (That’s the pride of life.) she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (NIV)

Very important! She ate the divine portion and because Eve and Adam ate the divine portion, what happened? Adam and Eve were cursed. They chose to be cursed.

What if Bill Gates of Microsoft tells you, “I like you. I will give you 90% of Microsoft. Just give me 10%. That’s my portion.” Would anyone here refuse that?

Well, that’s the kind of deal, the kind of partnership that God had with Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve enjoyed the garden. “I have created you in my image. I have made you. Everything is a gift from me. I want you to reflect your love to me. Show me your love.” That’s what God was saying throughout Genesis. “But there’s this one tree. Don’t mess around with it. It’s mine,” God said. “It’s my portion.”

You may be thinking, “Surly they could do that!” Why couldn’t they trust God that His provision for them would be enough, why did they not trust God and feel compelled to eat God’s portion?”

Trust is a Must

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. (NIV) (Another one of those IF / Then statements / 02-09-14 lesson) (IF) I trust. (Then) God keeps my paths straight.

Now, why does God want me to trust? The same reason he wanted Adam and Eve to trust Him. So that we can be in a relationship, so he could love me and do what’s best for me. Give me Abundant Life!

When we do things God’s way and we trust Him, we will be blessed. Proverbs 16:20 Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. (NIV) How many in here want to be blessed? I do. Well, blessed is the man or the woman who does what? Trusts in the Lord.

Tangible Apples

The Abundant Life includes being on the receiving end of the intangible and the tangible favor of God!

We’d like to trust God for forgiveness, for protection, for love, for peace that surpasses all understanding, but those are the intangibles. And that’s part of trust. But you and I are going to be blessed in tangible ways too. I’m going to be blessed. I’m going to be blessed with some fruit. Some tangible fruit, some tangible apples!

You probably wonder why these apples are up here, don’t you? (10 Apples in a basket) They are not here as a visual of the “forbidden fruit”! Apples have gotten a bad rap haven’t they? These apples represent the tangible blessing of God in our lives. We all have apples. Some have thousands, hundreds of thousands, and some have millions.

Jesus talked more about money than He talked about Heaven or Hell.

Today, I believe God is asking us, “Can you trust me with the money and can I trust you with the money? Will you honor me by honoring my portion?” Throughout Scripture, we see the power of this principle. We see the power of God’s portion. Later on it was called the tithe.

Tithe means Tenth

Mal 3:10 Bring the whole tithe (tenth) into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.

Everything I make or you make should be brought where? Technically speaking, we are not giving. We are bringing. God put’s 100 percent into your hands and he expects you to bring Him His portion.

The Bible says we’re to bring the tithe, God’s portion, to where? To the storehouse, your house of worship, your local church. The Abundant Life and the blessings are tied into this tithing truth.

Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. (NIV)

So let’s say God blesses me each week with (Count them for me) 10 Apples.

1. How many apples are God’s portion? One, a tenth is one apple. This is Gods portion.

2. Now which one of the 10 is God’s portion? Well, the first one smells good. It’s red and shiny, no bruises, it is the best. Scripture tells me I’m to bring the best to God. And it took me a little longer to understand this principle in the Bible, but I’m supposed to give the first and the best.

This is what I do. I take this one apple, God lets me keep and manage the other 9, I bring it to my local church and give it as if I am putting it in the hands of God. I’m bringing the tithe.

I’ve been doing that for 42 years. Janet and I have been doing that for 33 years. We have been bringing the tithe. When we were not making very much money, we brought the tithe. As the years have progressed, and as God has blessed us financially, we’ve been faithfully bringing the tithe.

Sowing Seeds

I’m not the only one bringing the apples today; many others here could say the same thing.

[Scott breaks open an apple] Look what is inside the apple. Seeds! So, literally, I am sowing seeds. I am bringing the first fruit of my gain to God. I’ve been doing this for 42 years. I’m putting an apple in His hand. In the hands of God, my meager tithe is multiplied. It is seeds, and He turns it back into my life and blesses us!

But here’s what we do. WE GO EVE! This is incredible, but a lot of us are eating the tithe.

“I would never do that! Eve may have been crazy enough to eat God’s portion but I would never do that… or would I? A lot of us are eating the tithes, God’s portion.

Why would we eat the tithe? We eat the tithe because of the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. We get the idea, “I can become like God.” “I can determine my own destiny, forge my own future, and pave my own path; I don’t have to trust God! So I will eat the tithe.” And that’s why some here are under a financial curse. When you eat God’s portion you are not bless able. You can’t even say, “God bless me.” You can’t even say that because you’re eating the tithe.

I would rather bring 10% and have the other 90% blessed as opposed to having all of my income cursed.

More Blessings Than Room

Mal 3:8-10 "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ "In tithes”—(What? We’re eating the tithe. We’re going Eve aren’t we?) and offerings. 9 You are under a curse– the whole nation of you– because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. (NIV)

The only time in the Bible that God says, “Test me and see if I’ll not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing”—oh my goodness—“that you’ll not have enough room for it.”

But when we eat the tithe, when we rob God, when we choose to be cursed, we are slamming the windows of heaven. We’re locking them up; we’re putting bars on the windows, not God. I will throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it! That’s the promise of God. And God always, always, always keeps His promise.

I’m a living, breathing, walking, talking, testimony of it and so are so many, many, many, many, many people here who bring the apples and put it in God’s hand. People who gave over and above to make everything happen here? Do a quick view of Believers Church—everything you see and experience hear is because people brought their apples and God blessed them with many more tangible blessings.

MARCH MADNESS NEXT STEP! – I will trust God and test God by bringing one tenth of my income to God’s house during the Month of March 2014.

Baptisms today are happening because we gave our apples! So, don’t eat the tithe, Eve. You’re going to curse yourself. Don’t let the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life mess you up.

It’s time for some people here to test God.

Funny, but you might say you are sitting on one of the keys to an abundant life. You’re sitting on the answer.

A dollar bill. Printed on our currency are the words “In God We Trust.” Do you trust Him? It’s all about trusting, bringing the tithe and the seed that continues to produce the blessings.

Life Group and Family Devotional Application

1. What if Bill Gates of Microsoft tells you, “I like you. I will give you 90% of Microsoft. Just give me 10%. That’s my portion.” Would anyone here refuse that?

2. Why do you think people trust God for salvation, healing, protection etc., yet they have such a hard time trusting Him with money?

3. God said when it comes to tithing to put Him to the test and see if He will pour out blessing upon you. Have you ever tested God in the area? If so what were the results?

4. How do you feel about the statement “I would rather bring 10% and have the other 90% blessed as opposed to having all of my income cursed.” Do you really believe this tithing principal?

Imagine being young, talented, attending Bible College, and having everything going for you, only to discover that you have a brain tumor that must be operated on immediately. In addition to that the Doctors tell you that your chances of surviving the surgery are slim and even if you do survive you are told that you will suffer severe memory loss.

This is exactly what Jordan Murray faced with a boldness and faith that only comes through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit! Join us at Believers Church this weekend at 9 or 11 a.m. and learn how God healed and delivered Jordan as she put her trust in Jesus, to fulfill His word and give her The Abundant Life!
