11-29-15 SP The Blessing Gift_Blog PicWhat Do You Want to Give this Holiday Season?

  1. Gift cards: Seven in 10 people (69%) plan to give gift cards for Christmas. Still fairly new as acceptable presents, gift cards may seem like the easy way out of shopping, but they’re actually what most people (82%) say they want. And, when chosen carefully, gift cards can be fun to give, as long as the giver takes the recipient’s likes and preferences into account.
  1. Electronics: Despite the high cost of electronics, 63% of people are going to give them this year. So, based solely on our survey, there is a good chance there will be a wrapped new phone, computer or tablet with your name on it. The number of respondents, who want electronics (76%), outnumbers those who will give electronics.
  1. Clothing: The majority of us (59%) plan to give someone clothes this year. It can be fun picking out outfits for others, and most people will be happy to get them, as 68% say they want clothes for Christmas.
  1. Books: Whether a publication is in digital or print, many people are reading something these days, and 58% of people are going to add to someone else’s reading collection this holiday. If you know the types of books a person likes, this is a great gift choice since 62% say they’d love to receive books.
  1. Toys: Whether or not we have children of our own, the majority of us (56%) plan to give toys for Christmas. It’s such a nice feeling seeing the look of excitement on kids’ faces when they unwrap presents on Christmas. Parents, as you can imagine, will be giving even more.

What if we gave our families a few of the things above, maybe, but what if we give them something even better?

The Blessing Gift

This Thanksgiving and Christmas Season give the Gift of a Blessing to your family.

Your Family and the Holidays

We all have family members that we aren’t looking forward to spending time.  A certain strain exists.

  • Sometimes related to issues of the past.
  • Other times it’s that unbelieving family members resent the believers.
    • Sometimes this happens because believers conduct themselves unwisely at family gatherings.
    • Or they are seeking to “scalp hunt for God” rather than simply showing love and respect to family members and letting the Holy Spirit take it from there.

Wouldn’t you agree that family members have a higher probability to be won to Christ by being blessed rather than by being made to feel either “less than” or “disapproved by” their believing relatives.

 The Strategy

This Holiday season as you visit with relatives, carry warmly expressed and lovingly worded blessings into your holiday gatherings.  Think about it, “Could I please speak a blessing of love over all of us?”  This is an offer that is hard to turn down.

  • This can be done at a personal level.
  • This can be done at a group level.
  • Blessings can be spoken in your conversation.
  • Blessings can be spoken in a formal bow-your-head prayer.
  • A blessing can even be spoken as a toast, a gesture that can be offered with water in your glass regardless of whatever anyone else has in theirs.

“Could I please speak a blessing of love over all of us?”  This is an offer that is hard to turn down.

How You Talk Makes a Difference-In Everything

In Proverbs 18:21 Solomon writes that “Life and Death are in the power of the tongue.”

Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. (NIV)

This Holiday Season your words can be LIFE GIVING or you can SPEAK DEATH.

In James 3:1-6, three pictures are painted of the tongue.

1) A bit that controls a horse, 2) a rudder that directs a ship, and 3) a fire that can harm and destroy.

Your words have incredible power to build up family members or tear them down emotionally.  Your words can mend relationship or destroy them.

Speak life to your family and bless them.

James 3:9-11 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? (NKJ)

What type of water will you be bringing home this Holiday Season?  Fresh or Bitter?

An Ambassador of Life

2 Corinthians 5:20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. (NIV)

God Is Sending You as an Ambassador of Life to Your Family

As in the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol,” Tiny Tim’s words ring true:

“God bless us, everyone!”

These words remind us of a crippled boy with nothing to give reaches beyond his limitation and loves unconditionally, speaking God’s blessings upon his family.

Love has a way of winning.  Remember our teaching from last week.  Blessings Overcome Curses.  Speaking a blessing over your family is a marvelous way of showing your love.

So reach out to your family as one who speaks “blessings,” as ambassadors of God’s love.

How to Bless Your Family

You might not be able to exercise all of the elements of a blessing at a family gathering (for example you may not be able to lay hands on them), but all of the elements of the blessing still apply.

We have learned that we are to:

1)  Bless By Faith

2)  Use the High Priestly Blessing as an Example

3)  Desire God’s Highest and Best For the Ones You are Blessing

4)  Laying on of Hands

5)  The Spoken Blessing

Along with these five steps I want to share with you:

THE FIVE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE FAMILY BLESSING

(“The Blessing” Gary Smalley & John Trent)

  • Meaningful Touch
  • A Spoken Message
  • Attaching “High Value” to the One Being Blessed
  • Picturing a Special Future for the One Being Blessed
  • An Active Commitment to Fulfill the Blessing
  • Meaningful Touch (Laying on of Hands)

Touching expresses love and care.  In Genesis 48  Joseph drew his two sons very close to his father, Jacob, so that he could lay his hands on the boys. In Mark 10:16   Jesus took the children in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them.  The laying on of the hands is especially important as we bless our children.  They should be taught that as we lay our hands upon them, they should expect God to impart favor to them.

Remember your hands should represent blessings to your children.  Be careful spanking your children with your bare hand.  You don’t want them to fear your hand, you want them to fear the rod or paddle.

If the opportunity arises don’t hesitate to lay hands on family members and bless them.

If you don’t feel comfortable with this or they would not feel comfortable with it, don’t push the issue.

In conversational blessing form you could just reach over and touch them as you speak a blessing.

So don’t hesitate to hold, hug, shake hands, and touch the ones you love.

  • A Spoken Message (The Spoken Blessing)
  • Find ways to affirm family members.
  • Let conversational encounters incorporate a kind of pre-blessing generosity and graciousness.
  • Use words of affirmation and approval.
  • Use words that commend and compliment.
  • Use words that specifically speak love and affection.
  • Use words that invoke hope and self-confidence.
  • Use words that answer pain and disappointment with support and faith.

Don’t Forget to Use the High Priestly Blessing as an Example

Use the timeless blessings in God’s Word.  Society is always open to “Blessing” (or “toasts”) with an ethnic flair.  For example the High Priestly Blessing:

Numbers 6:22-27And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: 24 “The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” ‘ 27 “So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”

This is a Three Part Blessing of – A) Protection, B) Favor and Grace, and C) Peace

We Are New Testament Priest

1 Peter 2:5 …you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (NIV)

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NIV)

Revelation 1:5-6 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.  To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father– to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. (NIV)

Let’s rise up and be the priest that Jesus has called us to be and bless our families with A) Protection,

  1. B) Favor and Grace, and C) Peace!

NEXT STEP:  Even before I see my family I will begin to pray for them and ask God to open doors for me to speak a blessing over their lives.

  • Attaching “High Value” to the One Being Blessed

(Desire God’s Highest and Best For the Ones You are Blessing)

  • Be honest with yourself and God.  If you are not feeling love and God’s best for certain family members ask yourself why.
  • You may need to spend some time in prayer.  You may need to forgive them.  You may need God to set you free from bitterness that you hold in your heart toward them.

NEXT STEP:  Today I will begin to pray and ask God to show me how valuable my family members are to Him and ask God to cultivate within me a desire for God’s best for them.

  • Picturing a Special Future for the One Being Blessed
  • Prepare yourself ahead of time.
    • What would you like to see God do in the lives of your extended family?
    • Do you see a special future for any of them?
  • Have you thought about it?  If not how can you effectively pray for them and bless them.  For many of us our prayers for our extended family is only in response to sickness or trouble.

NEXT STEP:  Today I will ask the Holy Spirit to let me see my family the way Jesus sees them through eyes of faith.

  • An Active Commitment to Fulfill the Blessing

After all the praying, all the planning, and after the blessing has been spoken, one of the most important things for a parent to remember is that they must have an active commitment to their child’s blessing.  They must do all they can to see to it that their child becomes everything that God has intended for them to be.

Or you bless you children to be godly, but you set an evil example for them.

Let us continue to bless our children, by faith, and let us continue to be actively committed to seeing that blessings come about.

These are THE FIVE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE FAMILY BLESSING, but don’t forget what we learned last week.  Everything in the Christian walk is about trusting God and faith!

Bless By Faith

Nothing is going to work if there is no faith in God to bring the blessing that you impart to your extended family.  For some of you blessing your family my take more faith than others.

As you spend time over the holidays with your extended family members, remember the exhortation of Solomon.

Proverbs 3:27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. (NIV)

If you know the power of the blessing, you know how to bless, you believe in the blessing, you are confident that blessings and good always overcomes curses and evil; then bless your family!

Why not?  Who else is going to bless them if you aren’t?

They are your family, your flesh and blood.  They deserve your blessing.

You may be their only hope.

I can’t think of a better gift to give this Holiday season than the gift of “The Blessing.”

Give THE BLESSING GIFT this year!  It will beat out everything else under the tree!

Life Group and Family Devotional Questions

  1. How would you describe your Holiday experiences with your extended family? What type of water will you be bringing home this Holiday Season, Fresh or Bitter?
  2. Have you ever formulated and spoke a blessing over your extended family?
  3. Can you honestly say that you have placed a “High Value” on your extended family members? Has God placed a “High Value” on them?
  4.  What special future do you see for some of your extended family members?
  5. What does it mean to have and “active commitment” to fulfill the blessing spoken over a person’s life?

11-22-15 SB Blessings Over Curses_BLOG PIC

During this series we’re not only establishing a biblical foundation for the Spoken Blessing, but we discovered

the prayer and the Spoken Blessing are two power tools that work together to bring blessing upon the lives of

God’s people.

We gained an understanding of the Redemptive Power of the Blessing which gave us a new revelation of God’s love for us.  How much does He love us?  He loves us so much that He allowed Jesus Christ the firstborn to take our sin upon Himself and give us the firstborn blessing of life and the promised Holy Spirit!

In week three we got down to the nut and bolts as we learned how to impart a blessing, so that we can begin to bless others!

1)  Bless By Faith  2) Use The High Priestly Blessing as an Example

Num 6:22-27 The Three Part Blessing –A) Protection, B) Favor and Grace, and C) Peace

3)  Desire God’s Highest and Best for the Ones You are Blessing            4) Laying on of Hands

5)  The Spoken Blessing

Today we are going to learn how to Overcome Evil with Good and exercise Blessings over Curses.

Called to Bless and Inherit a Blessing

1 Peter 3:8-9 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. (NIV)

Repay evil with a blessing.  Repay an insult with a blessing.  Why?

So that in the long run you will inherit a blessing!

Two Types of Curses seen in the New Testament

1) The Curse of the Law and 2) Curses Spoken with the Mouth or Maledictions

The Curse of the Law

Gal 3:10  All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”

SO WE ARE IN TROUBLE!  CURSED!  WE NEED A SAVIOR!

The answer to our problem is found in the Redemptive Power of the Blessing.

Gal 3:13-14  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”  He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. (NIV)

  • Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NIV)
  • Romans 4:6-8 David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.” (NIV)

Say it with me:

  1. Christ Jesus has redeemed from the curse of the law.
  2. I am blessed because my transgressions are forgiven and my sin is covered.
  3. I am blessed because my sins will not count against me!

The Malediction          Malediction – Web: 1) a curse; 2) slander

Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (NIV)

God promised to be Abraham’s defender against those who would speak a curse over his life.

The world may curse each other but this IS NOT what God expects out of His people.

James 3:8-12But no man can tame the tongue. (Apart from the transforming power of the Holy Spirit)  It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.10            Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.  My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12           Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?  Thus no spring can yield both salt water and fresh. (NKJ)

The Source of Curses and Maledictions

James 3:13-16 Who is wise and understanding among you?  Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.

What Do You Do When Someone Curses You With Their Words?

The 1st New Testament Curse was easy to overcome.  All we had to do was cry out to Jesus for mercy and grace and He took our curse upon Himself and gave us the firstborn blessing!

But to overcome the 2nd type of curse found in the New Testament, maledictions requires God’s help and action on our part.

What Do You Do When Someone Curses You With Their Words?  You Bless Them!

Romans 12:14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. (NIV)

1 Peter 3:9  Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. (NIV)

NEXT STEP:  This week I will pray for the ability to bless the one cursing me, and ask the Lord to show me how.

Three Bitter Waters

1) Harsh Words

  • You will never amount to anything. /           I wish you could be like your friend, _________.
  • Do I have to do everything for you? / I hope you marry someone who will take care of you.
  • You are an accident waiting to happen! /           What have you messed up this time?

In the South people think they can get away with saying anything as long as they proceed what they say with or follow what they say with “Bless their heart”.

  • He is such as an idiot; bless his heart.
  • Bless her heart she has always been a bit of a tramp.

2) Silence

  • Some parents may think that just simply being present communicates the blessing. Sadly, the major thing that silence communicates is confusion!
  • Parents will often ignore children as though they weren’t there. Couples will often co-exist in the same house but never interact with each other.
  • People will often meet someone in public that they know and speak to them but never introduce their spouse.
  • One may introduce their spouse to a friend in public but never mention the children standing there.

The lack of The Spoken Blessing in the home will have two results:

  1. Withdrawal and acceptance of failure as a way of life.

“Words have an awesome impact.  The impressions made by a father’s voice can set in motion

an entire trend of life.”   Gordon MacDonald

2. An over achiever or workaholic.  Always trying to please the parents or get the blessing.

“If I try a little harder then maybe I will get my parents blessing.” (Carried into adulthood,)

Some children feel like praise and blessings only come as a reward for doing good, a home run, good grades, or other such achievements.

A husband or wife may wonder why their spouse spends so much time helping others but ignores their responsibility at home.  Appreciation and the spoken blessing may not be being spoken in that house; where as the other recipient of the help is very grateful and speaks words of praise and adoration.

Are our Words really that powerful?

In Proverbs 18:21 Solomon writes that “Life and Death are in the power of the tongue.”

Your Words can be LIFE GIVING or you can SPEAK DEATH.

Remember, a lack of negative words does not translate into a blessing!          Good words are necessary!

  1. SelfCursing

Average person talks to himself or herself about 50,000 times a day.  80% is negative.

  • I’m stupid.         I can’t do that.               I doubt I can.
  • “No body likes me.”  (With that consistent attitude they are eventually right, no one likes to constantly hear that and no one will want to be around them.)

Remember, all you have to do is AGREE with what the Word of God says about you.

NEXT STEP:  This week I am going to listen to my words spoken about myself and repent if I am speaking curses over my own life.

Overcoming Evil with Good

Luke 6:27-28 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28     bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. (NIV)

Jesus as Our Model

1 Peter 2:15-17; 21-23 For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. 16 Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.  Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. (NIV)

Luke 23:33-34 When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals– one on his right, the other on his left.34     Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. (NIV)

 Paul’s Example

1 Cor 4:11-12 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.12 We work hard with our own hands.  When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; (NIV)

Peter’s Exhortation

1 Pet 3:8-9 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be

compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this

you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. (NIV)

1 Peter 3:14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed… (NIV)

Matthew 5:38-44 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person.  If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (NIV)

Second Mile Christianity!

1st Mile – The Curse is at work.

2nd Mile – The Blessing is at work.  Redemption is found in the second mile.

When we fight back we lose the opportunity to bring redemption into that relationship.

Sons of the Father

Matthew 5:45-46 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? (NIV)

  • Sons of the Father – (Vs 44 – 45) Blessing your enemies is a sign of maturity.

If you bless you will be mature Sons, partners with the Father, positioned beside the Father.  Seeing things from Father’s point of view.  Then you will say, “Father how can we help them today?  How can we bless them today Father?”

Romans 12:14-21 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.16 Live in harmony with one another.  Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil.  Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge;will repay,” says the Lord.20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give himsomething to drink.  In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, butovercome evil with good. (NIV)

Let’s Do the Math:

-1+ (-1) = -2       A cycle of cursing has begun.

-1+ (+1) = 0       This is 1st mile Christianity.

-1+ (+2) = 1       This is 2nd mile Christianity.

Redemption has begun.

St. Augustine compared good and evil to light and darkness.  Darkness is only the absence of light.  So evil is the absence of good just as darkness is the absence of light.

“The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”  Edmond Burk

Let’s do something!  Let’s overcome evil with good.  Let’s speak blessing over one another!

Impart Blessings Blog

During this series we’re not only establishing a biblical foundation for the Spoken Blessing, but we discovered that prayer and the Spoken Blessing are two power tools that work together to bring blessing upon the lives of God’s people.

Last week we gained an understanding of the Redemptive Power of the Blessing.  We are overwhelmed by God’s love for us that He would allow Jesus Christ the firstborn to take our sin upon Himself and give us the firstborn blessing of life and the promised Holy Spirit!

So I’m sure you are ready to get down to the nuts and bolts of How to Impart a Blessing, so that you can begin to bless others!  Let’s get right down to it.

1)  Bless By Faith.

Hebrews 11:20-21 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff. (NIV)

The Blessing must be spoken in Faith, like prayer, believing that God can cause the blessing to be fruitful.  You need to have faith for blessings just like you have faith for prayer.

  • “A Prayer must be prayed for it to work.”

If you don’t pray and believe, prayer doesn’t work.

  • “A Blessing must be spoken for it to work.”

If you don’t bless and believe, the blessing won’t work.

Faith Sees the Potential.

By Faith Jesus related to people on the basis of the potential He saw in their lives.  He called His unsaved, untrained disciples the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” (Matt. 5:13-14)

He saw what they would become through the Word that He spoke to them.

Jesus Saw Peter’s Potential.

Even as Jesus told Peter that he would deny Christ three times, Jesus added, “But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”  Luke 22:32

Notice Jesus said when you return, not if you return, or maybe if you return.  Through Faith and prayer Jesus believed that Peter would make it.

God Said, I Will Bless Them.

Num 6:27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.” (NIV)

You must believe that God will cause the blessing to come about. You are a Royal Priesthood (1 Peter 2:9a) so do what God told these Priest to do and begin to speak this blessing upon others.

2)  Use the High Priestly Blessing as an Example

Num 6:22-27 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: 24 “The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.” ‘ 27 “So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.” (NKJ)

The Three Part Blessing –1) Protection, 2) Favor and Grace, and 3) Peace

PART 1) PROTECTION  The LORD bless you and keep you;

  • The Lord bless you … an acknowledgment that the blessing comes from the Lord.
  • Keep you … God’s care and protection from the evils of this world.

Bless your family with God’s Divine Protection.

Children at School, Spouses at Work, Auto Protection, etc.

Bless others with God’s Divine Protection.

PART 2) FAVOR AND GRACE  The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;

  • The face of God is the personality and character of God.
    • His face upon you expresses His love and favor for you.  In Psalms, David prayed; Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. Psalms 31:16 (NIV)
  • God turning His face away was an expression of disfavor and chastisement.

The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;

  • … And be gracious to you.     Grace – God’s unmerited favor and enabling power.

Bless others with God’s Favor and Grace.

PART 3) PEACE The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

The Lord lifts up his countenance upon you, His face, and His manifest presence, which results in peace.

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Bless others with God’s Peace.

Num 6:27     “So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.”

 3)  Desire God’s Highest and Best for the Ones You are Blessing.

David Prayed for and Blessed Jerusalem  Ps 122:6-9 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you. 7 Peace be within your walls, prosperity within your palaces.” 8 For the sake of my brethren and companions, I will now say, “Peace be within you.” 9 Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek your good. (Good and Best)

  • What GOOD Do You Desire for the One Being Blessed?

For your children?  Your spouse?  Your family?  Your Church?

Speak what GOOD THINGS you desire for the one being blessed as a blessing over them.

·         What GOOD Does God Desire for the One Being Blessed?

Research the scripture and began to declare the Word of God as a Blessing.

Next Step: I will begin to formulate a spoken blessing for my family, friends, and church.

Attitudes Affect The Blessings.

Gen 27:2-4 (To Esau)Then he said, “Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my death. 3 “Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me. 4 “And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.” (NKJ)

Gen 27:25 He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, so that my soul may bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. (NKJ)

You see when you have been given to and blessed, you want to give and bless others.

  • Bad attitudes can hinder speaking the blessing.

We will look at this in more detail next week, but Jesus tells us to bless, even our enemies.

You need to bless with the right attitude; therefore you may need to work through some things before you are able to speak a blessing on your enemy.  Blessings cannot come from a critical attitude or a heart full of anger.

When it comes to blessing your enemies you must understand that they have a “High Value” to God.  Lost People Matter to God.  While we were still sinners Christ Jesus died for us.Bad attitudes can hinder receiving the blessing.

EX: David and his wife Michal  2 Sam 6:20-23 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!” 21 David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel– I will celebrate before the LORD. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.” 23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death. (NIV)

 4)  Laying on of Hands.

Genesis 48  Joseph drew his two sons very close to his father, Jacob, so that he could lay his hands on the boys.

Mark 10:16        Jesus took the children in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them.

The laying on of the hands is especially important as we bless our children. They should be taught that as we lay our hands upon them, they should expect God to impart favor to them.

NOTE:  Your hands should represent blessings to your children.  Be careful spanking your children with your bare hand.  You don’t want them to fear your hand, you want them to fear the rod or paddle.

Next Step: Ask your parents to bless you or an older brother or sister if parents have passed away.  Ask in faith and receive the blessing in faith.

5)  The Spoken Blessing.

In the Scripture a blessing becomes so only when it is spoken.

The spoken blessing is more than just speaking encouraging words.

In Numbers 6:22-27 we see that God expected Aaron and his sons to speak the blessing over the people and as they invoked (engaged, put into action, the life that flows from the name of God) His name, He (God) would be present in the blessing to impart blessings to them. “And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.”

  • God “spoke” and the world came into being. 1:3
  • God’s Word became flesh to communicate His love and to complete His plan of Salvation. Jn 1:14
  • Abraham spoke his blessing to his son Isaac.
  • Isaac spoke a blessing to his son Jacob.
  • Jacob gave a verbal blessing to his twelve sons.
  • Jesus spoke blessings upon children and His followers. He was speaking as He ascended to heaven.

Is the spoken word really that powerful?

In James 3, three pictures are painted of the tongue.

1) A bit that controls a horse, 2) a rudder that directs a ship, and 3) a fire that can harm and destroy.

Words have incredible power to build us up or tear us down emotionally.

Remember, the absence of negative words does not translate into a blessing !

Good words are necessary!

Proverbs 3:27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. (NIV)

Don’t withhold the spoken blessing when it is within your power to speak it. Tomorrow may be too late.

Always remember that as you begin to speak blessings…. God will be present to bless!
1)  Bless By Faith.
2)  Use The High Priestly Blessing as an Example.
Num 6:22-27 The Three Part Blessing –A) Protection, B) Favor and Grace, and C) Peace
3)  Desire God’s Highest and Best for the Ones You are Blessing.
4)  Laying on of Hands.
5)  The Spoken Blessing.

Try it!  Do it in Faith! See if it works!

Baptism Invitation

The spoken word is so powerful even the experience of being born again comes through the spoken blessing.

Rom 10:8-10 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (NIV)

“Confess with your mouth.”  A person believes the Word and speaks life over himself by confessing that Jesus is Lord.  What he speaks in faith becomes a reality in his life.

I can’t think of a better way to Speak with your Mouth that Jesus is your Lord than PUBLIC BAPTISM!

I can’t think of a better way to bring a blessing upon yourself than obey Jesus and be baptized!

Twice the Old Testament God allowed a younger brother to receive the older brothers firstborn double portion blessing.  Why did God reverse the order of the firstborn blessing with Jacob and Esau as well as Ephraim and Manasseh?

Because these two families prophetically point to a time when Jesus would come in the flesh in response to sinful man’s cry for God’s blessing!  God heard the cry of sinful man and blessed him by imparting the blessings of His firstborn, Christ Jesus, to the sinner!
