Mission Statement

To teach, encourage, and inspire Authentic Christianity

to the people of Statesboro, Bulloch County, and Surrounding Areas

Our Goals

  • To reach the unchurched of Statesboro and surrounding areas
  • To proclaim the word of reconciliation
  • To operate in power and purity
  • To encourage and build up all people
  • To help people discover their divine purpose and destiny
  • To be a family of love, acceptance, and forgiveness

The Purpose for the Body of Christ can be discovered in the Word of God.

We see five distinct purposes for the church in these two statements of Christ Jesus.

The Great Commandment        Matthew 22:36-40

The Great Commission            Matthew 28:19-20

Purpose # 1     “Worship”        “Love the Lord Your God”   Matt 22:37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

Purpose # 2     “Evangelism”             “Make Disciples of All Nations”           (Home and Abroad)

Matt 28:19  “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”

Purpose # 3     “Discipleship” “Teaching them to obey my commands”        Matt 28:20 “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Purpose # 4     “Fellowship”                “Baptizing Them” Matt 28:19  “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (NKJ)

Purpose # 5     “Ministry”        “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself” Matt 22:39 “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

NEXT STEP: This week I will commit to memory The Five Purposes of the Church.

“Soul Surfer” – A term from the 60’s, used in the 70’s as an antithesis to the growing professional surfing movement – White Board, Black Wetsuit only, no stickers of companies on their boards.  These Soul Surfers are the purest and are only in it for the love of surfing.

As we ride the wave of God together, we also want to be purest, riding for the right reasons: the love of seeing others be forgiven; set free from the bondage of sin and come into a relationship with Christ Jesus.  This brings us to our purpose of evangelism.

Purpose Two “Evangelism” “Make Disciples of All Nations” (Home and Abroad)

Evangelism is the Natural Outflow of a Worshiper

Isa 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (NIV)

John 4:28-29 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,

29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” (NIV)

Evangelism Was Jesus’ Purpose

Luke 4:43-44 But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea. (NIV)

Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” (NIV)

Not just to the Jews, but to the Gentiles as well.

John 10:16 I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. (NIV)

John 3:17-18 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (NIV)

Evangelism is our Personal Purpose

John 20:21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!  As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” (NIV)

What were some of the first words of Jesus’ ministry?

Mark 1:17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” (NIV)

“When researcher George Barna asked Christian adults what their most important goal was in life, not a single person said to make Disciples of Christ.

Evangelism is The Purpose of The Church

The Church is the Body of Christ.  Jesus is the Head of the Body and normally the Body follows the Head.  As “The Body of Christ” Jesus’ Purpose should be our Purpose.

Matt 28:19  “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (NKJ)

This is the Great Commission not the Great Suggestion!

  • The word “Go” in the great commission is a present participle in the Greek, which is better, read as “As you are going.”

Mark 16:15-16 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. (Our Part)

16  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

(NIV) (Their Part)

Matt 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (NIV)

Has this been fulfilled?  This can’t be accomplished by only one.

Created to Worship, Empowered to Witness

Just as we are created to worship, we are also empowered to witness.

Luke 24:45-49 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” (NIV)

The Promise of the Holy Spirit!

Acts 1:8-9 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. (NIV)

Jesus’ Last Words on Earth!

Acts 1:9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. (NIV)

  • The Early Church Moved in the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 4:33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. (NIV)

  • God’s manifest presence and power draws people to Him.

1 Cor 14:24-25 But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all,

25 and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare.  So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming,

“God is really among you!”(NIV)

Acts 2:11-12 … we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” (NIV)

Evangelism is making our worship (high worth and love) of the Lord public.

John 12:32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” (NIV)

We are to reflect the glory of God back to Him and in the process we are a shining light of the Glory of God to others.

Matt 5:13-16 “You are the salt of the earth.  But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.14            “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV)

Hiding your light under a basket robs God of the Glory He could receive.

Those that are in love talk about the one they love ALL THE TIME!

Evangelism is simply sharing your story.

  • Be Authentic – Paul said, “Imitate me. If you don’t know what to do.”
  • Be looking for opportunities! Don’t isolate yourself from the world.  Have an unsaved person to dinner.
  • Be Prepared – What’s your story? How does that tie into His story?

As we ride the wave of God together, we also want to be the purest, riding for the right reasons: the pure love of seeing others  forgiven; set free from the bondage of sin and come into a relationship with Christ Jesus.  For us Soul Surfing is the fulfillment of another one of the Five Purposes of the Church, the purpose of Evangelism.

One Hour on Wednesday

May 25th, 2016

Mark

Tonight we meet for One Hour on Wednesday at Believers Church! Bring your Bibles and turn to the Book of Mark as we continue studying verse by verse. Our College & Career and EDGE Youth Group will meet as well as Children’s Ministry for all ages. All happening tonight at 7 PM at Believers Church!

RADWORSHIP

Our surfing buddies have an expression they call Rad or Radical – Which means high performance or risk taking surfing, awesome or impressive!

This Sunday Pastor Scott is going to introduce us to a concept of worship that is Rad or Radical, high performance, maybe a bit risky for some, but will be awesome to experience.

This Rad Worship is the concept of worship as a lifestyle.

Not just a Sunday morning event called worship.  Not just a song played on “You tube” that makes you feel good, but rather living your life as a worshiper of God.  Living out one of our Five Purposes of the church; the purpose of worship.

Purpose # 1 “Worship”   “Love the Lord Your God”

Matthew 22:37  Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

5-15-16 Surf Up Cowabunga Promo PIC

Cowabunga is a slang word used in 1960’s surfer culture, as an expression of exhilaration when riding the waves!

What makes you yell Cowabunga?

What makes us at Believers Church yell Cowabunga is living according to our mission, goals, and purposes! In weeks one and two of Surf’s Up!, we looked at our Mission and Goals. This Sunday we will begin to search the scriptures for our Purpose as a Church.

We don’t decide what our purpose will be; we discover the purpose for which Christ Jesus has created our church. Remember, Jesus founded the church, died for the church, filled His church with the Holy Spirit, and will return for the Church. Therefore, it stands to reason that He also has a purpose for the church.

Join us Sunday at 9 or 11 a.m. for COWABUNGA!

We will also Honor our College & High School Graduates in each service.

Save the date for our Newcomers Lunch! You can sign up this week on your communication card or call the church at 912.681.1440.

Surf’s Up!      “Hang Ten”                           Believers Statesboro            05-08-16

HANG TEN 2Surfing begins with the surfer eyeing a rideable wave on the horizon. Then staying ahead of the crest until the surfboard is planing down the wave face, the surfer “pops up.”  A common problem for beginners is not even being able to catch the wave in the first place due to faulty positioning and coordination.  Conversely, one sign of a good surfer is being able to catch a difficult wave that other surfers cannot, with better positioning and coordination/balance.

Once the wave has started to carry the surfer forward, the surfer quickly jumps to his or her feet and proceeds to ride down the face of the wave, sometimes staying just ahead of the breaking part (white water) of the wave (in a place often referred to as “the pocket” or “the curl”), sometimes riding out beyond the pocket toward the shoulder of the wave.  This is a difficult process in total, where everything often seems to be happening nearly simultaneously, making it hard for the uninitiated to follow the steps.

“Hanging Ten” and “Hanging Five” are moves usually specific to longboarding. Hanging Ten refers to having both feet on the front end of the board with all ten of the surfer’s toes off the edge, also known as nose riding. Hanging Five is having just one foot near the front, and five toes off the edge.

Isa 51:15  “For I am the LORD your God, who churns up the sea so that its waves roar– the LORD Almighty is his name.” (NIV)

Mission Statement

 To teach, encourage, and inspire

Authentic Christianity

to the people of Statesboro, Bulloch County, and Surrounding Areas

NEXT STEP:  This week I will memorize and think about our Mission Statement.

 Long Boarding (Our Goals)

  • Yell Surf’s Up!

Surf’s Up!  This is the cry that goes out to all of the surfing cultures that the conditions are right for surfing!

Swell is generated when wind blows consistently over a large area of open water, called the wind’s fetch.  The size of a swell is determined by the strength of the wind, the length of its fetch and its duration.  So, surf tends to be larger and more prevalent on coastlines exposed to large expanses of ocean traversed by intense low pressure systems.

  • To reach the unchurched of Statesboro and surrounding areas
  • For us to live in the Bible belt, there sure are a lot of unchurched people in Statesboro.
  • New category: Formerly churched, but presently unchurched people.  Generally hurt.
  • Bottom Turn – the first turn at the bottom of the wave.

You’ve successfully made it to the bottom of the wave, and now you make your first turn back.

We, as Christians, do the same thing.  We successfully receive salvation and find ourselves in a good place but, we turn back to carry the Gospel to others.

  • To proclaim the word of reconciliation

2 Cor 5:17-20 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.  20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

  • Tube Riding, barreled, riding inside the curl of the wave.

“Tube riding” is when a surfer maneuvers into a position where the wave curls over the top of him or her, forming a “tube” (or “barrel”), with the rider inside the hollow cylindrical portion of the wave.

This difficult and sometimes dangerous procedure is arguably the most coveted and sought after goal in surfing.

Sometimes, the most dangerous, but yet the most coveted and sought after goal for a church is:

  • To operate in power and purity

In the first two decades of the twentieth century, a great divorce occurred among two groups of Evangelical Christians – Holiness and Pentecostal.

  • It was a feud over the nature of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, a spiritual experience that both groups strongly believed in.
  • Was the experience primarily about purity (cleansing from a heart divided between self and God) or about power (anointing for ministry and service)?[1]

I’ve been in churches that boast of great power, yet when exposed, they were full of sin.

I’ve been in churches that walk in great piety and purity, yet they have no power.

We believe the Holy Spirit purifies our lives and gives us great power.

  • Churches of Great Power but no Purity.
  • Churches of Great Piety but no Power.

Jesus is truly an example to us as to what walking in the purity and power of the Spirit is all about.

Luke 4:1-2 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.  (NIV)

Luke 4:14 “Jesus returned in the power of the Holy Spirit to Galilee.”

Matthew 4:23-24  tells us what Jesus did in Galilee, ‘in the power of the Holy Spirit.’

“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. 24 Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.”

Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (NIV)

  • Cut Back

Riding the wave and you swing back around and go back for more because it so much fun!

  • To encourage and build up all people

Rom 14:19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.  (NIV)

Heb 10:23-25 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another– and all the more as you see the Day approaching.  (NIV)

Next Step:  Today I will speak a word of encouragement to one family member and two non-family members.

  • Drop In

Dropping into or engaging the wave, most often as part of standing up.

  • To help people discover their divine purpose and destiny

We want you to “drop in”, engage your divine purpose and stand in your destiny!

Jer 29:11  For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (NIV)

 Open Beach

There are no turf wars here.

This beach and this wave of God is open to anyone who wants to ride!

  • To be a family of love, acceptance, and forgiveness

No matter what you have done before…

No matter what your church experiences have been before…

  • We love you unconditionally because Jesus loves you unconditionally.
  • We accept you just like you are.
  • We forgive you because Christ Jesus chose not only to forgive you, but to also pay a high price for your sins.

NEXT STEP: Today I will prayerfully make sure there is no unforgiveness in my heart toward anyone.

We are commanded to love each other, pray for each other, encourage each other, admonish each other, greet each other, serve each other, teach each other, accept each other, honor each other, bear each other’s burdens, forgive each other, sing to each other, submit to each other, and be devoted to each other.  Rick Warren

This is what membership in a local body is all about.  We are family.  We are connected.  We are in this together!

So, we are riding a wave of God here at Believers Church, and we invite you to come and ride it with us.
