CHOOSE LIFE    “Turn and Live”    Believers Statesboro      01-29-17

In the New Testament, The New Covenant, does God punish children for the sins of their fathers?  Absolutely not.

Do children sometimes suffer because of the sins of their parents?  Yes

In Deuteronomy 30:1-20, Moses challenged the people to make a life choice.  They had to choose life, prosperity, and blessings or death, destruction and curses.  But what you need to understand is that your choices don’t just affect you and you alone, they have a lasting effect on your family, children and descendants to come!  This is what I call The Ripple Effect.

Deuteronomy 30:19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live!

Not only are we what we are today because of choices we made in the past, but often our families and children are what they are because of choices we made in the past

We Will CHOOSE LIFE -John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

CHOOSE LIFE John 10:10

NEXT LIFE STEP:  I will memorize John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

We believe that there are two plans for our lives.  The thief’s plan to kill, steal, and destroy, and God’s plan to give us Abundant Life!  We get to choose which plan we will participate in, therefore CHOOSE LIFE!

Last week we saw the exhortation in Deuteronomy 30:1-20, as Moses challenged the people to make a life choice.  But unlike Monty Hall, in “Let’s Make a Deal”, he tells them what is behind each door!

Door #1 – Life and Prosperity                 Door #2 – Death and Destruction

Today we are going to encourage you to CHOOSE LIFE, because Life is Sacred.

CHOOSE LIFE Because All Life Is Sacred

In 2015 we amended our Tenants of Faith here at Believers Church to include a statement on “The Sanctity of Human Life”.

We Believe       that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image.

Human life is of inestimable worth in all its dimensions, including pre-born babies, the aged, the physically or mentally challenged, and every other stage or condition from conception through natural death.  We are therefore called to defend, protect, and value all human life. (Ps 139)

It’s odd that you would have to put something in writing that seems so intuitively obvious, that being, that all life is sacred to God and to us. In this everchanging world that we live in, however, this is something that we need to state, put in writing, and bring to attention.

  • A lack of sensitivity in our world today and the public attacking of one another is a direct result of the de-valuing of human life.
  • In our society Human Life is often considered cheap.
    • A lot of this mentality has been brought on by the teaching of Evolution, which basically

teaches that we are a product of TIME and CHANCE.

  • The Bible teaches us that we are a product of INTELLEGENT DESIGN.
·         ANSWERS IN GENESIS CONFERENCE – Sunday February 26 and Monday, February 27
  • Fighting and murder in the streets, not just murder, but the senseless taking of human life.
    • Video games allow our youths to kill hundreds a day, which numbs them to the value of life.
    • Adult entertainment? Watching humans in a cage beat each other bloody until unconscious.
  • The number of abortions are still extremely high, and politically and socially acceptable in America.
    • On September 11, 2001 America mourned at the loss of 3,500 lives. It was a tragedy, lives stripped away, future leaders lost, business entrepreneurs, future doctors, scientists suddenly gone.  Family members, loved ones would never come home again; America left to mourn.
    • But on September 12, 2001, 4000 more lives were lost. And again, on September 13 and 14 and 15.  Every day that year over 4000 unborn baby’s lives were taken away.  Some 1,460,000 per year, and we didn’t even shed a tear.  In the name of Pro Choice, we simply looked away.
    • Pro Life is not a political, democratic or republican issue. It’s a world view; it’s a life view.
    • The reality is that 1 out of 4 women have had an Abortion. In the Church 1 out of 10 have had an abortion, so let me quickly say, if you now feel that it was wrong, you can ask forgiveness and Jesus will completely forgive you.  There will be no condemnation in Christ Jesus, and there will be no condemnation from Pastor Scott.

Today is “Sanctity of Human Life” Sunday, and churches all over the world will be talking about the value of human life. As we are in this “CHOOSE LIFE” series, and Choose Life will be our theme throughout the year, we publicly declare that ALL HUMAN LIFE IS SCARED TO GOD AND SCARED TO US!

CHOOSE LIFE Because All Life Begins With God

God spoke a truth to Jeremiah that applies to you and me as well.

Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

God may not have appointed us as a prophet to the nation of Israel, but before we were formed in the womb, God knew us, and He had a purpose and a plan for our lives!

CHOOSE LIFE Because We Are Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

King David had a revelation of what God spoke to the prophet Jeremiah, when he too realized God knew him, had a purpose and plan for him, and he was formed in his mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13-16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. (Not just your physical body, but your inmost parts, including your soul, personality, and emotions.) 14     I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Colossians tells us that we, and all things were created by Jesus and for Jesus!

Colossians 1:16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God

prepared in advance for us to do.

These verses are teaching us that God planned us and designed us even before we were born.  Our lives and God’s plan for us, begins at conception.

It’s not like God hears the Baby Lullaby playing at the Hospital, you know the one they play every time a baby is born, and God says, “Oh now another baby just came into the world, now that he is born, I better come up with a plan and purpose for his life!”

Have we not said it over and over again?  God has a purpose and a plan for your life!

That’s one of the reasons we are doing this “Choose Life” series, to help us make everyday life decisions that will line up and work with Gods purpose and plan!

NEXT LIFE STEP: This week I will meditate on Psalms 139 and praise God because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

CHOOSE LIFE Because All Life Reflects the Image of God

You don’t have to read very far in the Bible to see that we are created in the image of God, this fact is right up front and established in Genesis Chapter one.

Genesis 1:26-28 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

We are created in the image of God and will reflect the image of God to this lost and dying world!

NEXT LIFE STEP: This year I will continue to make Life Choices that will assure that I reflect the true image of God to those around me.

CHOOSE LIFE Because All Life is Precious to God

Psalm 139:17-18 How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them!  18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.

Basically, what David, is saying here is, “How cool is it God that you are thinking about me!”  “You think about thousands of things, your thoughts are as many as the sand, but no matter how many thoughts you have, you still have me included, and when I wake up every day, I am still part of your overarching plan!”

Psalm 139:17 (NLT) How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!

All life is precious to God!  Adults and Children, the rich, the poor, the saint, the sinner, widows and orphans, the healthy, the sick, the perfect, those we consider imperfect; all lives matter to God and too us!

Are we still teaching our children the truths in God’s word that is so beautifully expressed in this song?

Jesus loves the little children      All the children of the world        Red and Yellow, Black and White

They are precious in His sight    Jesus loves the little children of the world

Salvation Call  Back to CHOOSE LIFE Because All Life is Precious to God

How do we know for sure that all lives are precious to God?  Because in order to redeem us, God gave a living stone very precious to Him (1 Peter 2:4) for our salvation.  Something precious was given to redeem something else that was precious.

1 Peter 1:18-21 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Life App Group and Family Devotional Application

  1. Help others CHOOSE LIFE. Who did you invite to church for this series?  How did it go?
  2. How much do you think life is valued or devalued in our society today? Why do you think this?
  3. Do you think people really have a realization of how fearfully and wonderfully they are made? (Ps 139) How much do you understand this fact?
  4. What does it mean to be made in the image of God? (Gn. 1:27) What responsibility does that bring?
  5. How well do you, we, reflect a TRUE image of God to a lost and dying world? (i.e. Can they see God in our marriage, our families, our work ethic, our kindness, our actions, or our concern for them…)
